01
Introdution
Tyndall National Institute is Irelands’ premier microelectronic and photonic research institution, located in Cork, in South-West of Ireland. It houses around 400 researchers, staff and students, organized in two centres. The larger, photonics, centre performs research “From Atoms to Systems”, investigating fundamental properties of photonics materials; fabrication and processing (both Si and III-V) of components; device prototype design, fabrication, assembly and packaging; all the way to systems implementation in areas such as telecommunications, sensors and biomedical. Through strong collaboration with academic partners through EU projects as well as industry, both domestic and multinational, Tyndall is on the forefront of photonics research. Over the next 5 years Tyndall will expand to a new site and double in staff size.
02
Role/Contribution
Photonics Packaging and Systems Integration Group, which is part of the Photonics Centre, is responsible for design, assembly and packaging of demonstrators that are the heart and the key outputs of the project. The group has experience in mechanical design, thermal simulations and electronic and photonic integration of photonic integrated circuits into viable prototypes.
03
Why is this project important?
The project gives an opportunity enhance skills and knowledge of the group in areas of sub-zero and cryogenic packaging of photonic devices. These conditions present unique engineering challenges that need to be addressed for quantum computing and processing systems. As a result, our group will be better poised to obtain more funding in the future and tackle increasingly complex demands for packaging for low-temperature applications.
