Introdution
Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is located in the center of one of the most powerful technology hubs in the world, Brainport Eindhoven. Globally, it stands out when it comes to collaborating with advanced industries. It hosts the Eindhoven Hendrik Casimir Institute (EHCI), where synergy between electronics, photonics and quantum technology is explored by over 300 scientists, working on material, device and systems research. EHCI is one of the world’s leading institutes in the field of photonic integration and has a large cleanroom (800 m2) optimized for III/V semiconductors and optoelectronics. Research into photonic integrated circuits is geared towards the integration of increasingly more complex and smaller components on a single chip, providing innovative solutions that are faster, smaller, more energy-efficient and cheaper.

Role/Contribution
TU/e will develop and coordinate the photonic integration platform for QPIC1550. It will do so by leveraging its existing InP-based technology expertise and combine that heterogeneously with SiN-based circuitry. Through dedicated process design kits, it will support Partners with the realization of the quantum technology demonstrators in the project. It will furthermore expand its portfolio of InP building blocks with single-photon avalanche detectors (SPADs).

Why is this project important?
QPIC1550 builds further on the established InP-based membrane platform (IMOS), currently offered to academics and industry as multi-project wafer runs (https://www.jeppix.eu/imos/), and expands it with ultra-low loss waveguide capacity and avalanche photodetection. These additions make the IMOS platform competitive for a broad range of applications, within and far beyond quantum technology.
